Residential Intersections | Steer Clear | State Farm® [MUSIC PLAYING] (IMAGE) An animated car is seen driving along a simply drawn roadway. As it proceeds, we see vehicles passing through an intersection, and then we see the car indicate the need to look both ways. Next, we see an animated intersection from above. Vehicles pass through it, and then an aqua-colored square shaded area covers the intersection. (Text on screen) Residential Intersections (Announcer: Male voice) Always be alert and cautious when approaching intersections. You may encounter a driver who doesn't stop for a stop sign, is running a red light, or racing through a green one. Even when the intersection is controlled by signs or signals, you still need to be on the lookout for hazards. Before we discuss the steps involved in passing through an intersection, we'll explain a concept called the point of no return. This is the point where the driver makes the crucial decision to either continue through the intersection or stopping before the intersection and waiting. (Text on screen) Point of no return (Announcer: Male voice) Be sure to slow down as you approach an intersection and carefully scan ahead for vehicles, pedestrians, and other potential hazards. If it's all clear, determine if the light will stay green or if a yellow one is about to turn red. At the point of no return, make your decision to stop or proceed through the intersection. (IMAGE) An animated view of the car as it would be seen by the driver proceeds down the road. A green stoplight is in the distance. A vehicle pops up, and then pedestrians. The light turns yellow and then red. (Text on screen) Point of no return (Announcer: Male voice) If you decide to stop, you should stop at the intersection's legal stop line. (IMAGE) An overhead view of the intersection is seen. A car stops at the line. The line changes from gray to aqua to gray again. Then, the crosswalk changes from gray to aqua to gray again. The car takes a left through the intersection. Next, the animation indicates to look both ways, and a pedestrian appears at the car’s left. The car drives off into the distance and the rest of the animated roadway disappears. (Announcer: Male voice) If there isn't a line, stop just before the crosswalk or stop sign. If you decide to proceed through the intersection, you should have already slowed down prior to this point, so you can react to anything. Look left, right, and left again to make sure you haven't missed any pedestrian stepping into the crosswalk. [MUSIC PLAYING]
