"Don’t You” Behind-The-Scenes (Image) Behind-the-scenes look at the filming of “Don’t You” commercial. Scene opens with a production slate/clapper board. Film crew is buzzing around as the director calls, “Action.” Video footage is projected on a iPad. A homeless man walks across the room. An aerial shot of a full soup kitchen is shown, then image switches to show cameraman moving camera back. (Image) Singer Willis Earl Beal is seen on set, on the video production monitor, then talks to camera. Image switches to show video crew filming soup kitchen scenes. (Speaker: Willis Earl Beal) State Farm hired me to do this job at a time when I still had no address. When I was told that this had to do with homelessness, it surprised me that State Farm was making a homeless effort. I think it's uncommon and I think it's great. Image switches to show Willis Earl Beal sitting in a crowd of homeless people in the soup kitchen. (Speaker: Willis Earl Beal) I was homeless for a little while. It's not homeless people, it's people. Go out in the street and see that things are pretty rough out there. (Image) Willis Earl Beal in studio singing song, “Don’t You.” Image switches to him talking to the camera, then to another man at a keyboard in the studio while Willis sings into a microphone. (Speaker: Willis Earl Beal) I love this song. You know, I had a relationship with this song. (Speaker: Willis Earl Beal) [SINGING] Won't you come see about me, I'll be your home, dancing, you know it, baby. (Image) Close up of man playing keyboard. Image switches to studio soundboard and a man working on a laptop mixing the recording. Next we see Willis Earl Beal sitting in production room, listening to song with a group of people. Then we see him again singing at the microphone. (Speaker: Willis Earl Beal) I am so intense about expressing what I personally want to express, I literally have to get lost in the song. And if you're getting lost in a song, I'm going to be really feeling it. (Speaker: Willis Earl Beal) [SINGING] Don't you forget about me. (Image) Willis Earl Beal talks to camera, then we see him walk into a real soup kitchen filled with people. People are smiling and talking with each other. He walks over to the piano and starts singing. (Speaker: Willis Earl Beal) I guess they saw in me something that was genuine and something that could connect to people. (Speaker: Willis Earl Beal) What I did yesterday was I came down with Gavin and I surprised the people. All the staff knew that I was going to come down and sing, but none of the people knew. (Images) Camera pans across the faces of those in the soup kitchen as Willis Earl Beal sings. All stop and listen. (Speaker: Willis Earl Beal) [SINGING] Won't you come see about me. I'll be your home, and sing, you know it, babe. Tell me your troubles and doubts, giving me everything inside and out. (Image) People in soup kitchen gather around the piano while he sings. Image switches to Willis Earl Beal talking to the camera again. (Speaker: Willis Earl Beal) My reasoning for wanting to do an impromptu performance and not wanting to tell them is because I wanted to sing to them, and have it not be a part of what we were doing. And so there's an intimacy that I'm building. It ended up being this experience where we were all just this one entity, trying to accomplish this thing. [APPLAUSE] (Image) Everyone in room starts to applause and Willis Beal Earl finishes singing. (Speaker: Willis Earl Beal) That was for you all. (Image) Image switches to him talking to the camera, then again to show video crew filming. (Speaker: Willis Earl Beal) It's homelessness. It's such a huge effort, the direct impact you can have on society is helping people. It's a good thing.
